My name is Fiona. I am 26 years old and live in Ontario, Canada.
I find it striking that even when 1 in 5 people per year in Canada will experience mental illness, those of us affected often feel so isolated. Those who suffer from mental illness and their loved ones can feel like no one understands their journeys, can relate to their experiences or holds the same doubts as they do. My hope in creating this blog is that I will add a voice to the chorus of individuals I so admire who speak publicly about their mental illness in order to spread understanding and awareness. North America has made great strides towards de-stigmatizing individuals with mental illness, but there is still ground to cover. Perhaps I can contribute towards that effort by sharing my experiences and insights.
I have been dealing with mental health difficulties for most of my life. Even when I look back upon my childhood memories, it is clear to me that the roots of mental illness were present. I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder with Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder. I have experience with both inpatient and outpatient mental health services. I am currently still receiving a variety of forms of treatment which include seeing a psychiatrist, psychologist (CBT and DBT based), exposure therapy and participating in group therapy programs.
Aside from mental health, I am also passionate about children, literature, food, Harry Potter and musical theatre. My husband is the love of my life, with my friends, family and puppy trailing not far behind.
I hope you enjoy my blog.
